This test determines the fatigue life of rubber compounds when they undergo a continual tensile-strain cycle. The specimens are tested as whole, with no cuts, cracks, or flaws. Failure is indicated by a complete rupture of the test specimen, so any imperfections may be an unwanted catalyst.
This standard details one procedure for determining fatigue life, which gives an estimate of the crack initiation behavior of rubber vulcanizate. While the information may be useful in predicting the flex-life performance of a compound in actual service (flex fatigue), there will be many other fatigue factors in a real-life environment that are not measured in this test method.
However, this test procedure yields data which can be used for a comparative evaluation of the ability of rubber compounds to withstand extended cycling fatigue. This would be particularly useful when assessing the suitability of a rubber compound from an array of potential options.
