Summary

This test is designed to determine the ability of rubber compounds to withstand compressive stresses and their agility after compression. The application of a stress can be a continual known pressure or a cycle of deformation and recovery designed to test the result of intermittent compressive forces. These tests can be undertaken at varying temperatures.

Test Details

Compression set tests are mainly applicable for materials, components and products which will be used in conditions involving static stresses, and for use in both an air or liquid environment. There are two tests covered by this standard, which are:

  • Test A - Compression set under constant force in air
  • Test B - Compression set under constant deflection in air

While the test method is optional, it provides the opportunity to align with the service the results are intended for.

Types of products / materials generally tested in our laboratory:

  • Rubber used in machinery mountings, vibration dampers, and seals

Please note: The information outlined above is to be used as reference for ASTM D395 Standard Test Method for Rubber Property - Compression Set. Please refer to ASTM International for full details and the most current version.
