John Manley

Principal Consultant in United Kingdom specialising in Rubber

John began his career in the rubber industry in 1978 with BTR Silvertown Ltd – a manufacturer of specialised rubber products, where he worked his way up to a senior technical position. He joined Smithers in 1991 as a Consultant in the Rubber Technology department. During his 23 years at Smithers he has been responsible for managing a large number of single client consultancy projects involving rubbers and other polymeric materials. These have addressed a wide range of topics, such as material selection, compound formulation design, material and process development, failure analysis, technical trouble shooting and evaluation and development of new products for the non-tyre rubber sectors. He has also carried out technical management roles in EU funded collaborative research projects concerned with the use of nano-materials in rubber compounds and recycling of tyre rubber.

At present he is a Principal Consultant in the Consultancy Group at Smithers and uses his extensive knowledge and expertise to provide clients with expert advice concerning rubber product failure, material selection and compound design and has produced over 750 technical reports. Contracts involving technical auditing and teaching of rubber technology to over 700 delegates have been undertaken in the UK and Europe. 

He has provided legal expert witness support to clients both in and outside the UK.

Qualifications and professional accreditation

John holds a degree in Rubber Technology and is a member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
