Standard name: ISO/TS 21396:2017: Rubber — Determination of mass concentration of tire and road wear particles (TRWP) in soil and sediments — Pyrolysis-GC/MS method

The test method in this standard is designed to test for rubber particulates from on-road tire wear that may collect in soil. These tire and road wear particles (TRWP) are the result of friction between tire treads and road surfaces and consist of both tire materials and mineral encrustations from the road itself.

The standard specifies key steps to this method:

  • Collection and quantification of soil and sediment samples
  • Generating and quantifying pyrolysis fragments from soil and sediment samples
  • Calculation of TRWP concentration

ISO 21396 contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) established in 2015, namely:

  • Responsible consumption and production
  • Innovation, industry, and infrastructure
