Tire manufacturers have long considered the challenges of the “magic triangle,” a practical model of tire performance as a give-and-take between traction, treadwear, and rolling resistance. As demand continues for reducing the carbon footprint, tire OEMs continue striving to maximize fuel efficiency for a given vehicle by improving rolling resistance without sacrificing traction. This green tire industry-wide effort dates back almost thirty years.
In this first of a three-part webinar series, Smithers experts Christine Domer and Walter Waddell will deliver an overview of the green tire and the silica-filled tire tread. They will start with the green tire development work from the early 1990s to the present day, reviewing the initial patent work, the “magic triangle,” tire labeling, and other important factors in the history of the green tire.
Domer and Waddell will provide an in-depth review of the particular importance of silica technology in green tire development. They will discuss other performance enhancing materials that have impacted tire tread performance, including elastomers, process oils, performance resins, and organosilanes.

This webinar is the first in a three-part series on green tire chemistry, designed to help attendees understand the important parameters of a passenger car tire tread materials that successfully expand the magic triangle of tire performance.
Christine has over 30 years of material science experience in the tire and rubber industries, with special expertise in raw materials, cure development engineering, compounding, reinforcements, and processing in both tire and non-tire applications. Christine joined the Smithers team in 2016 and is General Manager of the Akron Laboratories (both chemical and physical labs) and the Smithers Tire Analysis Report.
Walter H. Waddell is an independent consultant for Smithers. He retired from ExxonMobil Chemical and worked at Carnegie-Mellon University, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, and PPG. He has a B.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry, 37 patents, 157 publications, and 173 presentations.
