Most adhesive bonds experience continuous stress during use. Although the level of stress may be relatively low, exposure can continue for weeks, months or even years.

A bond demonstrating high strength or fibre tear during dynamic rupture testing does not necessarily indicate how it will perform under sustained loading. For example, a self-adhesive label may peel intact when pulled gradually but tear when pulled quickly.

Creep resistance testing can therefore provide a better understanding of how an adhesive bond performs under prolonged loading and help assess its long-term durability.

Testing can also evaluate bond performance at elevated temperatures, including conditions relevant to packaging storage, transport and end-use environments. Low-temperature performance can be assessed through dynamic rupture testing under chilled or freezing conditions.

Smithers' creep testing procedures draw on methods developed through collaborative industry and government research projects.
