This standard is not a list of test criteria but rather a reference document used to support engineering analyses and the development of environmental criteria for specific materials, equipment, and test specifications.

Categories of climate data included in MIL-STD-210 include:
  • Temperatures and humidity levels
  • Precipitation, including rain, snow, and hail
  • Atmospheric density and pressure
  • Ozone concentration
  • Wind speed
  • Diurnal cycles
MIL-STD-210 covers most land, sea, and air environments where military equipment may operate. This includes five “regional types.” Where relevant, listed data includes highest recorded, frequency of occurrence, and long-term extremes. In some cases, basic cycles are also included.

When developing materials intended for an anomalous environment, such as a mountaintop or an icebreaking operation, or locations south of 60°S latitude, MIL-STD-210 should not be used. Additionally, MIL-STD-210 does not cover storage or transit conditions.

MIL-STD-210 includes extensive additional explanations on how data is collected and organized, relevant time intervals, and other important clarifications to help users understand the data and apply it most effectively.

How Smithers Supports MIL-STD-210

Smithers supports defense manufacturers and suppliers through independent testing, technical assessment, and environmental simulation informed by MIL-STD-210 climatic data. Our specialists help develop representative testing programs that reflect intended operating environments, supporting material qualification, durability assessment, and long-term performance evaluation.
