Puncture resistance is an important performance property for paperboard and corrugated packaging where the material may be exposed to impact or penetration during handling, storage or use.

Beach puncture testing

The Beach puncture test uses a pendulum fitted with a pyramid-shaped puncture head to measure the energy required to penetrate the board. Results are reported in Beach units, with each unit equivalent to 0.0299 joules.

Standards

Puncture resistance testing is performed in accordance with BS 4816, ISO 3036 and TAPPI T 803.
