The Push Toward Electrification

More and more industries are exploring new applications for electrification, from electric vehicles to smart appliances. This shift is driving a spike in demand for wiring harnesses that can withstand their service environment and protect the functionality of a given electrical system.

The push toward electrification is well illustrated by the evolution of the Ford Mustang. In 1965, the Ford Mustang’s wiring diagram manual contained just fifteen pages. The same document for the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach E is 750 pages long—a fifty-fold increase in less than 60 years.

The automotive industry is rich with examples of electrification advances, especially as electric vehicles and autonomous driving features become more popular. An increasing number of vehicles these days rely on 48-volt architecture to accommodate the many electrical systems being added. Many cars— electric, hybrid, or otherwise—have unique sensors for headlight range, chassis position, motor level, throttle position, HVAC, steering, fuel levels, wheel speed, mirrors, and many more. These sensors serve maintenance and driver comfort purposes as well as critical safety functions, such as collision avoidance, tire inflation pressure monitoring, and system failure detection. As advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) progress toward greater levels of autonomy, this trend toward electrification will continue to grow.
