Meet The Project Engineer: T.J. Smith

Meet T.J. Smith, one of our newest team members at the Smithers Distribution Testing Lab in Lansing, MI.

What Is Your Prior Experience? What University Or College Did You Attend?

Before joining Smithers, I spent time as a Packaging Engineer and Supplier Quality Engineer for Dart Container Corporation, a single-use food & beverage manufacturer. My previous role was primarily product development focused. Prior to starting at Dart, I attended Michigan State University and received my four-year degree in packaging engineering.

What Interested You In The Role At Smithers?

I was looking for a challenging technical role in package testing, where I could help clients solve packaging issues. Overall, Smithers offered a wide range of packaging and testing capabilities, which is what interested me the most. Also, working with projects across multiple industries and packaging challenges provides a lot of interesting variety.

What Does Your Typical Day At The Lab Look Like?

I am conducting testing programs with the various distribution testing standards and applying them to many different applications in the medical, automotive, and consumer product segments. I enjoy using our laboratory equipment. I get hands-on experience and see a wide variety of clients' products being tested. Every day is different, and each project is new and exciting. I am also working with our team to maintain our quality system.

What Are You Most Proud Of?

I am most proud of my work ethic and family. I strive to bring high-quality results in a timely and efficient manner while meeting the expectations of clients. My wife and I have three young boys who keep us busy all the time.

How Do You Spend Your Time Outside Of Work?

When I am not working, I like to spend my time outdoors camping, fishing, and hunting. My family also has a cabin in Northern Michigan that we like to spend time at during the summer. I also am an avid baseball fan. I enjoy taking my boys to the minor league games and watching the Lansing Lugnuts.
