SETAC Presentation: Method Development using a Non-standard Species

The OECD Test Guideline 239, Water-Sediment Myriophyllum spicatum Toxicity Test, is often used as a baseline approach for testing other species of aquatic macrophytes. The methods do not always readily apply to other species and this can become an issue for Species Sensitivity Distribution (SSD) tests where a plurality of species with varying growth conditions might be used.

Smithers Biologist, Chelsea Hedderig, describes a series of experiments that evaluated a variety of environmental parameters that resulted in a growth profile of Vallisneria americana suitable for SSDs while providing the least divergence from the OECD 239 conditions.
