The testing and measurement of the permeability and barrier properties of rubber and plastics to gases is important in the evaluation of polymer compounds for products such as inner tubes, tubeless-tire liners, hoses, balloons and other gas containers, seals, and diaphragms.
The determinations are made using the cavity of a test cell which is divided by a disc test piece into a high-pressure and low-pressure side. The high-pressure side is connected to a constant-pressure test gas reservoir. The gas permeates into the low-pressure which is connected to a capillary tube which measures volume change caused by the permeation of the gas.
