Akron, Ohio’s population increased from 69,000 to more than 208,000 in the decade from 1910-1920. It was recognized as one of the fastest-growing cities in the United Sates. The tire industry in Northeast Ohio grew and prospered so rapidly that by 1930, Akron rubber factories were producing 40% of the nation’s tires.

Despite some diversification after its 1972 merger, most clients were tied to tire manufacturing and the automotive sector. In 1975, when the tire industry began undergoing significant changes, Smithers had to adapt to survive.

Mike Hochschwender never imagined working for Smithers Scientific Services. His dream was to become an oceanographer. A passionate swimmer from a young age, Mike was the youngest certified diver in the U.S. at 11 and excelled at Firestone High School, later being inducted into its Sports Hall of Fame.

Before attending the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania to earn his MBA, Mike Hochschwender attended several American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) meetings. One meeting in Philadelphia stood out, where he overheard a discussion about a new requirement in Europe: companies would need ISO 9001 certification to do business there.

By 2012, biologics, rooted in genetic research and the Human Genome Project, were transforming the pharmaceutical market, particularly in cancer treatments, vaccines, and gene therapies. To support the development of large-molecule drugs, bioanalytical contract research organizations (CROs) like Avanza Labs emerged.

One way this was accomplished was by adding a unique name to “Smithers,” such as “Smithers Viscient.” This marketing approach reinforced the Smithers name and enabled the companies to be viewed as dedicated experts in their industry. This was a successful strategy for a long time.
